Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Answers to our most frequently asked questions.

Each lesson is 15 minutes.
Yes, you can ask your tutor questions at any point during the lesson but they will also ask you if you have any towards the end of each lesson.
Life is busy - messaging lets you connect wherever you are at a time convenient for you. For example, how many times have you looked at your phone so far today?
The short answer: because we want you to do your lessons. When you don't schedule, your chances of actually doing your lessons are substantially reduced. Just like scheduling a session with a personal trainer at the gym. It keeps you accountable so that you actually do the lesson. Don’t take our word for it though :) Here's what some of our students had to say: “Definitely helps to have scheduled lessons. I have had the book and the CD for over a year and I just don't find the time to use it but if there is an appointment with the tutor it forces you to progress” “Scheduling in advance is good for commitment. It was great that there was some flexibility to shift time or date though, as sometimes something comes up.” Cath “Scheduling lessons in advance was very important to ensuring that I consistently participated and that i was committed. Having a human being actually provided a lot of discipline.”

Telegram is a messaging app, very similar to WhatsApp. The major difference (and one of the reasons we use Telegram) is that Telegram is designed, developed and run by a non-profit organisation whose sole purpose is to produce a messaging app that properly protects users' privacy. WhatsApp, on the other hand, is owned and run by Facebook, a company whose business model is built on advertising. There is no other widely-used app like Telegram which is as secure, safe and private. Telegram has more than 100 million users worldwide and one of the primary reasons why people use it is because of how well it protects user data and privacy. Telegram's source code is open-source, meaning that we are able to verify exactly how it works and what it does, down to the nitty gritty technical details. You can read more about their privacy policy here: https://telegram.org/privacy.
(1) You’re interacting with a real person - they can’t work for mahala.
(2) When you pay for something, you prioritise it. Which means you're much more likely to stick with it and progress in it.
(3) You're helping Xhosa and Zulu speakers earn an income from their language knowledge.
Real-time feedback, interaction and accountability. An app doesn't care about you and you're not likely to care about it. Having a real tutor means there's another person, other than yourself, who cares about your language learning journey and is investing in makeing it happen. Here’s what our students think: “Made all the difference to have a real live person. First of all the motivation. You knew there was somebody waiting there instead of just an app or software program which you could do any time and probably end up not doing. For encouragement as well and for pronunciation.” - Sven
